CIZHONG
At the base of the Upper Mekong River valley, Cizhong lies in a fertile green field dotted by prayer flags, farm houses, and waterfalls.
A hundred years ago, French missionaries ventured overland to northern Yunnan province, the gateway to the heartland of Tibetan Buddhism.
A century later, the churches in these regions are still thriving.
Cizhong Catholic Church Visit
The Cizhong Catholic Church was first built in 1867 and then rebuilt in 1909. It combines the architectural features of both western cultures and China's Tibet, Han, and Bai ethnic groups. The church and its wing room, gate, cellar and grape yard have all been well preserved by the local government and listed as a key national cultural protection relic in 2006. The villagers come to worship on weekends and during festivals campfires are lit and local dances are performed in front of the church to celebrate.
